Part 3 of 7 - Network with Impact by Cécile Bastien Remy

During the lockdown, internet connection has become an umbilical cord to the outside world. Our jobs, school and connection with other human beings depend on it. On and off line, Networking with impact is paramount to create your next meaningful business opportunity. In the last Newsletter, we covered the Mindset and the strength of weak ties and How to select the right events. Today let’s look at the last three phases of stage number one: Your preparation to Network with Impact #1- "How can I help you?" This is a life lesson I learned the hard way. At the time, I had turned 22 and attended one of my first ever Networking event. I had joined a group of older guys (30 something!). I was asked the following questions: “Cécile, your career and goals sound interesting, how can we help you?” – My answer was a blank stare, not knowing what to say. Since that day I never leave home to attend an event without having a clear answer to that question. Remember, there is always something others can help you with. An introduction to a thought leader? Picking up ideas from more business savvy experts? Brainstorming on the new up and coming trends in the industry? Make sure you can confidently answer this question. #2 - Set specific goals. Charles Darwin said: “A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.” Networking events can feel like a waste of time, so here is how you can be efficient for the ones you select: Set S-M-A-R-T goals: (Sensible – Measurable – Achievable – Realistic – Times Specifics) before every single event. For example: I am attending this event for 2 hours, and I will talk to 5 people I have never met. Meaning that I should not spend more than 24 minutes per new person I come in contact with. This way you manage your time better. Once you reach your objectives, you can go home. Feeling fulfilled with your outstanding time management. #3 - Is your Pitch ready ? How comfortable are you when someone ask you the following question: What is it that you do for a living? Two options: First, it opens up the trap of unspecific, easily forgettable answers. Or on the contrary an outpour of an endless list of your life story. As a communication and presentation professional, I know that Pitching becomes very easy with a simple structure. Try this one for your Network Pitch: -> What Problem do you solve? « I am the bridge between valuable ideas and finding finances to bring them to life. » -> What has one of you clients/business partners/ or colleague said about your Skills/Products or Services? « The entrepreneurs I help appreciate the quality of the contacts I bring, and my contacts enjoy the screening I do on the start-up I present to them. » -> What do you love about your work? « I am passionate about what I do because I can support the life cycle of inspiring ideas. » You should to consider the preparation phase as being the lower part of the iceberg. What I want to give you is the structure to Network with Impact. Once you have it, it automatically provides the pattern for the action.
